Māori Korowai & Kākahu - Handwoven Cloaks by Whitiwhiti Taonga
“Rakatira e tu”
Adornments of our Tūpuna, worn with mana, whakamarumaru me te mana motuhake.
Traditionally made cloaks, 100% muka, extenuating Te Tai Ao, tūturu concepts & practices.
Our korowai are more than cloaks - they are the living taonga that carry the stories of our tūpuna.
At Whitiwhiti Taonga, we weave each Māori cloak with deep respect for tīkanga, connecting people to their whakapapa, iwi and whānau
The Meaning of a Korowai & Kākahu
A korowai is a traditional Māori cloak, woven with muka extracted from harakeke (flax) and adorned with feathers or tāniko patterns.
Each design carries its own story of mana, protection and leadership.
In te ao Māori, a korowai is not just worn; it is carried with pride, connecting the wearer to their whakapapa and whenua.
Our Weaving process
Every korowai we create is handwoven using traditional Māori weaving techniques. From preparing harakeke to dyeing and weaving, we honour the old methods passed down by our tūpuna.
