Waka Tūpāpaku

“Ka moe, ka mate, i roto i te aroha o te Atua. ko te waka tūpāpaku hei tiaki te whānau”

The Waka Tūpāpaku is a sacred Māori funerary canoe, traditionally used to transport the deceased with respect and care. Each waka embodies deep whakapapa, tīkanga, and spiritual significance, connecting whānau to their tūpuna. At Whitiwhiti Taonga, we explore both the craftmanship and their cultural heritage behind these remarkable taonga.

Cultural and Spiritual Significance

The Waka Tūpāpaku holds profound cultural and spiritual meaning, representing the journey of the deceased from the physical world to the spiritual realm. It is a symbol of mana and respect, reflecting the customs and traditions of the iwi it belongs to

Materials and Weaving Techniques

Each Waka Tūpāpaku is carefully woven from harakeke, selected for strength and flexibility. If weaving patterns are used they honor taditional tīkanga while ensuring the Waka Tūpāpaku is functional for ceremonial use.
