At Whitiwhiti Taonga, each wahakura is woven with intention - a sacred balance of tradition, care, and aroha. Every strand of harakeke connects people to their whakapapa, the wehnua, and the wairua that sustains new life. Our wahakura honor the old ways while embracing the needs of today’s whānau, offering a safe and meaningful beginning for pēpī.

Wahakura - Traditional Māori Flax Bassinets

“Nurturing & protecting intergenerational manākitanga”

The Significance of Wahakura in Māori Culture

The wahakura is more than a sleeping basket - it is a vessel of aroha, whakamarumaru (protection) and connection. Woven form harakeke, it carries the whakapapa of the weaver, the whenua, and the pēpī who rests within.

Handcrafted with Care and Whakapapa

Each wahakura is woven by hand, following tīkanga Māori and guided by whakapapa. Every strand reflects patience, purpose, and respect for the traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Materials and Weaving Techniques

Our wahakura are crafted from carefully harvested harakeke, chosen for its strength and softness. Traditional weaving “taki tahi” ensure each piece is durable.

How to Care for Your Wahakura

To honor your taonga, keep it in a cool, dry space away from direct sunlight. Gently wipe with a soft cloth when needed and allow the fibers to breath naturally in the fresh air where possible
